The Swallows Neil Lanham gives talks on his life as an auctioneer in Suffolk but more important of the meaning of Orality - the spoken word and all that it passes in terms of our identity - our regional and even national identity. 'We are all born into Orality' he says 'and we learn to speak from our parents and that is where we get our identity. It passes not only this but our traditions and the many sayings that we use that come off the backbrain are all metaphors, and put a measurement on all that we see and tell. Stories were told not for entertainment but for a reason, a purpose and they all passed wisdom - hilarious wisdom. I enjoy going to local history groups but more I enjoy going to Women's Institutes because they are the mothers, the mothers who are custodians, who pass initially from one generation to the next our identity, our traditions, our wisdoms'.
